UN Adopts Blockchain to Modernize Pension Identity Verification

The United Nations has launched a blockchain-based identity verification system to modernize operations within its Joint Staff Pension Fund (UNJSPF). The initiative replaces outdated manual processes prone to errors, aiming to boost efficiency and strengthen data protection.

The system, built on the Digital Certificate of Entitlement (DCE) using self-sovereign identity (SSI), gives participants full control of their personal data while ensuring secure validation of pension eligibility. Unlike traditional centralized models, this blockchain approach minimizes risks tied to unauthorized access and database vulnerabilities.

Early results show a sharp reduction in payment suspensions, streamlined operations, and improved security. Encouraged by these gains, the UN plans to extend the solution to additional agencies and potentially external organizations. According to UN experts, this innovation paves the way for interoperable credentials and secure data exchanges, reinforcing blockchain as a foundation for future digital transformation across the institution.
